Baths and Lamp Room

Baths and Lamp Room

At the start of their shift, the miners collected their lamp and number in this lamp room – in miners’ jargon, the ‘lampisterie’. The numbers were useful for checking who was below ground at any one time.

Once back up top, the miners washed up in large shower rooms.

Also located in this complex was the milk bar. After their shift, the miners could get a free milk or chocolate milk drink here. Milk enhances the body’s production of phlegm; spitting those out helped remove the coal dust from miners’ bodies.
